What platforms do you use? Beside it being fandom dependent (which I do think plays a big role), I figure the platform used also plays a significant part (I happen to think of more involved communities for fandom when I hear LJ,DW, or some forum versus Twitter or Tumblr).

Additionally, I think it depends on the corner of fandom. My first "involved" fandom was on a website for fics of a certain [small] ship, complete with a forum (where I made some fandom friends for the first time). Everyone was super chill and nice (despite my overzealous youth) and there were even links to affiliates of --GASP -- different ships involving the MC! Good times.
