Age difference most likely, but I'm not in that fandom so idk.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
The age difference isn't great, but it's definitely not the primary reason. Snape is racist against and specifically and callously shitty towards Hermione.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
How was Snape racist to her?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
He is racist against her insofar as she is a Muggle and he's racist against Muggles. And he is specifically and callously shitty towards her.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's why he was upset when the painting called her a Mudblood, right?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Are you saying that he's not racist?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
He was at one point. Not when he was working for Dumbledore against Voldemort. It's pretty obvious he regretted his actions.

Plus he was worse to Neville than he was to Hermione and Neville was pureblood. So he wasn't singling out Muggleborns.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that he regrets his actions (because Lily died) is not necessarily the same as repudiating all of his former beliefs.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
There's more to suggest he did than not.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
This. It boggles my mind how so many people are like "did racist shit as a troubled kid/young adult? RACIST FOR LIFE!!" We all know James is the only one who's allowed to change for the better.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
There's no evidence of it! There's evidence that he opposes Voldemort, but that's not the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
He got mad when womeon called Hermione a racist term remember?

What's a womeon?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
A typo, Sherlock.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
There are plenty of people in fandom who think the narrative too easily forgave James for being a bully. I've even seen people who theorize that he went on to mistreat Lily.

And most of them are -- wait for it -- Snape stans!

James bullied Snape at school and died at 21. Snape was basically in the top level of the wizard SS. There needed to be a lot more evidence to persuade me he didn't have racist beliefs any more than there was provided in the books.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-07 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
We know racist terminology upset him. What more do you need?

A lot more than what's in the book.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-08 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
So him repudiating racist terminology in private, not showing any signs of prejudice after joining Dumbledore and ultimately giving up his life for the cause all mean nothing?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-08 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You can tell people not to say obvious racist slurs and still be racist.

It's pretty obvious he regretted his actions.

There's never any mention of him recanting though, he just didn't want to hurt Lily. I'm interested in what passages suggest to you he stopped believing in the ideology.
