Thing is: People like OPs friend tend not to be the people who go "actually, you're right" when criticised and instead love to throw a fit that even their friends turned against them, the traitors! Because they usually think they're entirely justified in their frothing rage.

True. Which is why I'd suggest a gentle intervention rather than a confrontation, but I'd understand if OP didn't want to go that route. Although... if I had a friend who did this regularly, I don't think I'd find it funny after a while. I'd find it really draining and I'd probably end the friendship myself. It seems kinder than laughing behind my "friend's" back.
