I am going to make my case for The Rag And Bone Shop. It is a fairly short novel (but not too short). I think it is also pretty relevant in today's climate. Also, don't look up too much of the plot! This is a pretty good summary.

"Twelve-year old Jason is accused of the brutal murder of a young girl. Is he innocent or guilty? The shocked town calls on an interrogator with a stellar reputation: he always gets a confession."
