nayrt - IME, people who don't have dysfunctional relationships with their parents often can't grasp that other peoples' experiences are different. They assume that because their parents were okay that everyone else must be in the same boat, so naturally it seems weird or impossible to them that a parental death wouldn't be the worst kind of grief to experience.
