Re: Wonder Woman
This sketch may have been informed by what happened with Ghostbusters, with McKinnon playing Holzman as lesbian within sharp boundaries from the studio that she not be obviously lesbian. It might also be a nod to Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, which will open up to wider release this Friday. The whole problem that Wonder Woman can be lesbian/bi and kinky in subtext as long as that is never explicitly stated has plagued the character from her creation.
And, maybe there was a bit of mockery of how eagerly LGBT people read ourselves into that subtext. It doesn't help that the performance of the whole thing was wooden and awkward. So the contrast between the Amazons flirting with each other and Diana protesting too much that they're all "sisters" didn't quite work for me. It's pretty standard fare for guest hosts to do a sketch mocking their previous roles though.
