Re: Blade Runner 2049

A friend and I did. Neither of us saw the original, and...man. I'm baffled people say it's brilliant, a masterpiece, evocative, the like. It was endlessly cold and sterile and the moments that seemed like they tried to be revelations or sympathetic insights, like the cold boss lady's "Do what you have to do" were just...'okay. And?' The main guy especially was like most big budget video game protagonists - middle-aged, short-cropped brown hair, stubble, stoic, destroying stuff and killing without batting an eye, intense emotions manifesting as anger explosions, tragic backstory...really, the only characters we had the slightest curiosity about were the guy with his dog and the memory-builder lady.

I wish I could see what everyone else sees in this. :\ Sure, there's some striking set pieces, but I just sat there baffled we were meant to take a scene of robots choking each other to death underwater seriously. The movie as a whole seemed to ask what a woman's worth was, but...man. I was definitely not in the target audience.

I think it's just one of those different strokes for different folks things.

I mean, I haven't seen 2049 yet but the original is certainly something that you could describe as cold and sterile. Magnificiently so, in my view, but still - cold and sterile. It's a very specific aesthetic framework.

there are two factors at play, I think. the aesthetic and tone are not for everyone; it's a "love it or hate it" kind of thing, I think.

But also, I kinda hate to be that person, but...it really doesn't make a lot of sense unless you've seen the first one. I'd have been totally lost too.
