Twitter still undefeated

Her comment doesn't negate his point though? They both did good and bad things. She just named one of the bad things. And I say this as someone who's neutral on the guy (and on Hefner I suppose).

(Anonymous) 2017-10-09 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
In the context, I think Whedon's tweet is pretty clearly a defense of Hefner against criticism of him.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-09 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-09 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm definitely not a Hefner fan, but Joss's tweet just sounds like the sane counterpoint to a lot of people's simplistic black-and-white thinking when it comes to judging character.

It's a good burn

(Anonymous) 2017-10-10 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
No because Hefner did NOT "do some good things" unless all you are interested in is making more (young gullible) pussy available for men without any consequence to them, which is why HH supported the causes he did, not for any wish to see female automomy.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-09 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
He really went there? Why?
Why did he feel the great need to publicly defend HH?
I mean, aside from being an asshole...what could be his motive?
To feel better about someone he idolized, perhaps? To stick up for an "icon" of the sex trade?
I mean, I've definitely heard more bad things about him than good lately...but I know some people liked the creeper.
OTOH...when we're publicly finding out some of the suppressed things that made him actually, a pretty terrible human, why defend him then?
Just to be contrary, to stick up for another dude (creeper!bro solidarity) or because he looked up to him.
(Boys will be boys and livin the dream amiright)

(Anonymous) 2017-10-09 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Joss thinks he's smarter than everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-09 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I’ve actually heard some conflicting things about Heffner. A lot of people are talking about the contributions he made towards normalizing homosexuality (that I’d never heard of) and that is stuff that I do believe needs to be praised, but a lot of his defenders are going to be a little overly sensitive towards any criticisms that verge on slut-shaming, even if things like his being buried next to Marilyn Monroe are very creepy and deserve to be shamed.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-09 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's your last point...it's not so much about Hefner, it's about Whedon using the controversy over Hefner to relate the conversation back to himself.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-10 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty gross in itself. :(

(Anonymous) 2017-10-10 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was about idolizing Hugh Hefner or even defending him, exactly. I think it's that Whedon sees the controversy over Hefner's career as being quite similar to his own. Whedon's come under a lot of fire about his feminist street cred and recently, his alleged affairs. I'm guessing he feels very much unfairly criticized by the media and fans and he's trying to make a point about how people are complex. Unfortunately, the fact that this is a pretty self centered move is not lost upon the internet at large.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-10 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
This is true though. Joss Whedon seems like kind of a shitbag, so it usually doesn't take long before I can sit back, relax and watch the wank fly.

Wow, Joss is such a trash bag on fire, my word. You'd think with all the criticism he's under and the watchful eye of the public he would have more mindfulness of his words and actions.

Also, I gotta agree, OP. It's nice to watch and not get involved.

Oh I agree it'd be in his best interests but I don't think he can, to be honest. He's got quite an ego and lacks self awareness when it comes to his own flaws and failings. I think he genuinely believed that tweet would be a snarky put down of the mic drop variety instead of... well, what it actually was.
