So I had my first physical therapy appointment today. Turns out I have a bad hip as well as a bad back. Yay. Anyway, the therapist wants me to start using a pool to take pressure off my back for a while. The problem is, the only pool available this time of year here is at the YMCA. And I'm not a fan of them and not sure I want to give them money.

I don't know if it is everywhere or just here, but their religious focus makes me uncomfortable. Not sure if they've been involved in any of the specific things like denying employees birth control or being against gay marriage, but in my experience most organizations that talk about themselves as religious are.

I guess it probably does vary pretty vastly from place to place. Around here it's pretty much just a gym with no religious component whatsoever, but I can see how it might be different somewhere else.

Yes, maybe. The websites for all the ones here specify their religious focus.

That's interesting. I just went and looked at the website of the one near me, and you literally would not be able to tell it was a religious organization if you didn't know what the acronym stood for. I honestly think the website might not include the word "Christian" anywhere on it.

I live in a suburb of Los Angeles and it's like that here too - I belonged for about a year and never saw anything religious at all. But I'm not that surprised to find out it's different in other areas.

Curves should be avoided for that reason.

It is going from 83 degrees to 53 degrees and back to high 70s over the next three days. STOP TEASING ME WITH WINTER!

THIS! It'll be 70s all day and 50s at night. I wish things would be consistent. :/

I need to lose weight because since I got promoted to a more sedentary job earlier this year, where I stand behind a desk all day instead of moving around, I've gained weight, my feet swell, and my ankles hate me. I want a treadmill for under my desk but they're expensive and I work with the public.

Cut sugar, low carb diets generally lower inflammation, especially keto ones. You don't even have to work out to gain the benefits it will get you, including weight loss.

AYRT--honestly, the proliferation of ketogenic diets for non-epilepsy sufferers creeps me out. They're hard to do well without doctor supervision and would be especially nasty for me since I haven't eaten meat in 23 years and don't intend to ever start again. Most "keto diets" don't actually have enough protein or few enough carbs to really be ketogenic, it's just Atkins/Paleo/etc by another name.

And I prefer how I feel and look if I eat as much as I want and exercise a lot to how I look and feel if I diet and don't exercise as much. I would almost certainly lose way more weight if I completely changed the way I ate and also exercised a ton, but I would be miserable, and it's doubtful the weight loss would stick long term, because I might be skinnier but so fucking what, I wouldn't be happy.

When my body was at it's healthiest and I got the most exercise and ate the most balanced diet of my life, I was miserable because I had a bit less than $20 a week for food and had to walk 8 miles round trip to buy groceries. I lived off what I could schlep uphill in a backpack for 4 miles, and I had no place to cook. I was raised to believe white sugar and flour were evil and screamed at for eating anything containing either, and that cars were a necessary evil to be avoided whenever possible. I like cooking and baking and candy-making, I like food, including prepackaged junk food and baked goods that use tons of sugar, and I think meat is disgusting. Keto diets aren't for me.

I grow my own fruit and veggies and raise my own laying hens, and I walk everywhere. I cook my own meals whenever I can. I've been vegetarian over 20 years. But like a lot of people, I gained weight when I ended up with a sedentary job and need to get more excercise elsewhere now that my job doesn't involve walking, bending, lifting, and stretching all day.

My period's running late so I'm gonna be on the rag while on vacation. I just hope it starts in the next day or two so I don't have Day 1 festivities on the plane. It's always a delight being That Passenger. The one with gas and looking kinda listless, and you're wondering if they're contagious. Well, airplane row buddy, you're in luck! I'm not gonna be contagious.

Sort of minor sort of not? Several months ago I had a blowup with my spouse that was basically them going "I work all day, what do you even do?" so I got pissed off, told them I do everything around the house so they can come home and play video games all evening or use their days off to go have fun. I sat down and made a chart of Every. Single. Thing. I do around the house. They apologized and admitted I did a shitton of work every day. This was after a minor blowup where I pointed out to them that leaving a task undone but expecting it to get done was LEAVING IT FOR ME TO DO. That they just... had a mental disconnect between leaving a dirty dish out and clean dishes appearing in the cabinets and didn't really think about the fact that if they don't do it, I have to.

About two weeks ago I had a bad mental health swing. I told them flat out I was in a bad headspace and the MOST I was able to do was feed myself. Everything else was just not going to happen.

They were sympathetic and promised to take over all my work until I was in a better headspace (thankfully these bad swings usually only last a week or two.)

Today they finally noticed the house was filthy, the dishes unwashed laundry unwashed, pets all needed cleaning, foodbowls and water bowls almost empty, and they'd flown into a tizzy of HOLYSHITHOWDIDTHEHOUSEGETSOGROSS?!

.....

Because I've spend the past two goddamn weeks laying on the couch crying instead of DOING ALL THAT SHIT LIKE I TOLD YOU WAS HAPPENING. WHICH IS WHY YOU SAID YOU'D DO IT INSTEAD. YOU STILL HAVE THE CHORE LIST I MADE FOR FUCKS SAKE.

Fucking hell they're a reasonable intelligent adult, why are they so fucking convinced that House Elves take care of things?

Are you by chance female and your partner is male?

http://www.metafilter.com/151267/Wheres-My-Cut-On-Unpaid-Emotional-Labor

Short answer is because men are largely socialized and raised to not even SEE the work that goes into certain tasks because they're used to the women in their lives doing it all, unnoticed and unthanked. It's shitty and you have my sympathies. I hope you made copies of that chart and can blow it up to poster size prints.
