"It's great there finally exists a character like this, so instead I'm going to make sure it happens in fic!"

Do yo not realize how that sounds? It sounds like you can only enjoy degraded women.

How important is it that peoples' sexual fantasies aren't problematic? Do you also kinkshame people who enjoy being degraded themselves during sex?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-14 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
lol "kinkshaming"

get a life, you fucking weirdo.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-14 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, there it is.

Not Op, but what if I enjoy degraded women so much because I insert myself in their place? I dont't read rapefics because I want to rape someone but because I find the fantasy version of that situation hot if it were happening to me.

A lot of what we find hot is culturally conditioned, and rape-is-sexy stories are part of rape culture. She really wanted it, it's what women really want, ...

I'm not saying you shouldn't read or write it, but I'm weirded out by how defensive people get about it. We criticize media for reinforcing problematic attitudes all the time, but porn is off-limits because...? Oh yeah, we shouldn't kinkshame, right.

I like a good rapefic, so it's not like I'm just attacking everyone who's into it. I'm just saying it's worth asking why, and how what you do might affect the world. Personally, I'm a lot more comfortable with rape-is-sexy stories in fandom, because they're usually tagged and fandom at least talks about these things.

DA - To me it's the difference between going into a restaurant and ordering a steak and getting meat, and finding out the vegetable soup has meat, and the broccoli soup, and the salad, and the french fries are fried in lard, and the sodas have some bacon sprinkled on top.

One is an opening for discussion on if sneaking bacon in with the soda is unfair to vegetarians and pushing a cultural narrative of normalizing meat consumption. The other is ordering a steak. I order a steak, I know I'm getting a big ol' hunk of tasty animal product.

Sneaking some rapey themes into tons of mainstream media is a whole different ballpark than strolling up to the ao3 and clicking on it and going "Gimmie some of your finest rape, smut-site"

I don't know if I agree there. My observations are that people find things even hotter when society tells them it's wrong and openly disapproves of it.

See: Incest fics.

Less a rebuttal more a general prayer.

Yes, thank you! This is how I feel exactly.

Speaking purely from my own perspective of course, but people can get defensive about that kind of criticism because in our current internet culture "criticism" turns into "verbally abuse and accuse this person of being morally reprehensible because I think what they like is problematic" very easily. Add in the fact that what people like in their porn can and is often be very divergent from what they like and approve of in all other aspects of their lives (and is not something that they can just 'switch off' and stop finding hot), yes, a lot of people will jump the defensive gun when the subject comes up.
