I don't know which specific movie this is, but I was always happy that Mercedes didn't wind up with Edmond. That ship sailed years ago.

Agreed. The end of the book romance IS creepy, but I don't like them ending up together, either.

It's the 2002 version of the Count of Monte Cristo. I love that movie. Who does she end up with in the book?

If it's still Mandego, I'll be upset, as he was portrayed to be a complete asshole in the movie.

She joins a convent.

Oh, that's actually quite beautiful. I'm glad then. In what way was it creepy (if she made the choice to go into the convent on her own)?

I think "creepy" is referring to the Count getting together with Haydee, since she's way younger than him and he took care of her for years.

Anon is probably talking about the Count/Haydee - his young protege/adopted daughter/that girl he's been introducing as his concubine (it sort of makes sense in context).

There's a considerable age difference and power imbalance. On the other hand... we see the Count going to considerable lengths *not* to presume on her: he tries to get her to go out and meet nice young people, he's clear that if she finds someone she likes she can have a cash dowry and freedom to go, he's a reeeally long way through the book considering his imminent demise before it crosses his mind that her feelings for him might be other than strictly filial... even at the end, he's planning on leaving her his fortune and just disappearing.

And she puts her foot down. Hard.

If any relationship with that much imbalance creeps you out, then sure. But as written, the Count (an extreme control-freak) is very hands off in his dealings with her, and she is very, very assertive.

Thanks!

Already had this book on my list, will read it for sure.
