What peice of media was completely different from what you expected?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-14 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Either because of fandom or actual marketing?

Lost
I thought it was a Celebrity Survivor show.

The fandom led me to believe Teen Wolf was a WAY different show than it was.

The trailers and the fans of Magic Mike made me think I was getting a fun movie about male strippers. Instead I got some drama about how fame and drugs can ruin you.

That's interesting about Magic Mike because apparently Channing Tatum has said it was partly based on his own experiences from when he worked as a stripper before making it big in Hollywood.

Yes to Magic Mike.

I've heard better things about the sequel, but the first one is way too bogged down by the carpentry storyline. I came for the male strippers, I wanted the male strippers. I was not expecting anything more deep than male strippers. And the truth is, the movie doesn't really carry off the deeper plot line.

I had the same experience with Magic Mike. I thought it was going to be a female gaze/female fantasy movie, and while there were some nice stripping scenes, it hard dark tones that I was not expecting to see going into it.

I don't really know what I thought Moulin Rouge was going to be like, but at the time my mom talked me into going to see it with her, I know I had no idea it was a musical or have as much comedy in it as it did. It was round about the So Exciting number that I was like "Wtf? Okay, then!"

Kind of dumb one. Ok, I found out about House MD at the same time this commercial was on TV. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lomy7xAVDKE I usually tune out commercials and do other stuff while they're on, so I somehow missed it was for a fake reality show.

So when I heard people talking about the show House, I assumed it was that reality show. I have no interest in reality shows, so I never investigated further.

It took something like 6 months to a year before I realized House MD and Tiny House the Fake Reality Show were unconnected.

I saw a lot of online fandom discussion about The Winter Soldier before I watched it, and I went into it expecting The Angsty And UST-Filled Amnesiac Reunion Of Bucky And Steve, but what I got instead was Steve And Natasha's Excellent Adventure With Sam And Also Bucky Is There For Like 10 Minutes. I mean, it was a really good movie (and now that I'm thinking about it, I want to watch it again), but it was not at all what the internet had led me to believe I was going to see.

The Bridge to Terabitha just... the trailers were nothing to do with that the movie was actually about. Jesus Christ, that was an experience to say the least when you were expecting a happy Narnia-esque movie. :|

I had to read the book for school years ago, and when I saw the trailers, I thought "Wow, that doesn't look like it bears much resemblance to the book" and assumed they *had* made it into a "happy Narnia-esque movie." I've never gotten around to seeing it (not that interested, regardless).

Huh, are you from the US? Because I thought everyone had to read that book for school and have their heart ripped out and stepped on.

Ace Attorney. "Defence lawyer in murder trials" is hardly the word that evokes light-hearted comedy and heartwarming bonding.

Dazed and Confused. it was neither the stoner comedy nor the horny airhead teenager movie the ads made it look like.

Supernatural. Based on what I'd seen on Tumblr, I expected it to be a lot more wink-and-nudge slashy and over-the-top.

Crimson Peak. The trailer made it look like a horror movie, not a gothic romance. I still ended up enjoying it.

I would call it a gothic horror movie, myself. I wouldn't sell it as a dark, heavy horror movie; it was definitely on the light end of the horror spectrum. But I wouldn't call it a romance.

Uzumaki by Junji Ito. The review I read made it sound subtle and creepy and unique and it was a lot more "It's a scary thing shaped like a spiral! Look!"

Maybe I just didn't get it or something, because everyone but me seems to love it.

The movie was really subpar, honestly. The manga it's based on is genuinely horrifying, though; it got under my skin in ways I really didn't expect it to.

SA

I just... realized you never specified the movie and were probably talking about the manga. Sorry!

I knew nothing about Fight Club before I watched it. I thought it was going to be a movie about boxing or something. Maybe underground boxing.

Jumanji

(Anonymous) 2017-10-15 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
It was a good movie, but the trailer made it seem like a comedy.

I think Guardians of the Galaxy was pretty much what I expected, but the cancer scene at the beginning caught me off guard.

Hope Springs... the trailers made it seem like a funny Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones romantic comedy.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Depressing. Steve Carrol could not save it either. Nope. Never again.

Heavy Metal

(Anonymous) 2017-10-15 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I was led to believe that Heavy Metal was all rock music and awesome animation, basically rock Fantasia, but there didn't seem to be that much rock music actually in it and I wasn't that impressed with the animation.

If you like animated boobs, you might like it, though.
