Yeah, same. You don't have to believe in it for it to be an interesting set of ideas and an interesting aesthetic.

I don't believe that ghosts/demons and other supernatural shit are real at all but I love me supernatural themed shows/movies/books. But personally I just like some kind of fantastical element to a story because I find more mundane settings dull, I'm here for characters fighting unrealistic monsters with magic, superpowers, or their own two fists as best they can.

I think that's pretty common? I don't believe in that stuff either, but I still enjoy ghost stories and horror fiction.

(Hit send too soon)

They're interesting subjects and they make a good basis for fictional stories, that's all. I don't believe in elves or dragons, but still like LOTR.

I think some of it plays on some deep-seated cultural (or generally human) beliefs which do influence people, even people who think they're complete bullshit. I don't believe in any of it when I sit down and think about it but I enjoy it in fiction too.

I've seen comments along these lines from time to time, and I don't get it. Literally the only times I've ever seen anyone claim a correlation between liking supernatural fiction, and believing in actual supernatural stuff is people disclaiming being like that.

Aside from ghost-hunter or other paranormal 'documentaries', which get their effect from being meant to be believed, but that doesn't seem to be what you're talking about.

Ghosts and demons in fiction are an interesting way to explore people's motivations and desires. Doesn't matter if you think they're real or not, it's about the stories they allow you to tell.

This.

And the fantastical nature of those stories can be a good way to safely confront realistic fears as well.

Well sure. I'm absolutely a skeptic but ghosts and demons still interest me in the context of a novel, for example. Stuff doesn't have to be real in order to be interesting.

I'm EXACTLY the same way, and I don't know why you would have to believe in something to enjoy it in a fictional context, whether it's demons, aliens, or finding one's soulmate.
