Maybe it's because you mentioned history but I totally read this as "become evil, or Romans" and was like hey I would totally read a book where characters suddenly turned out to be ancient Romans. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition Caesar crossing the Rubicon

Actually on topic though, I don't mind it if it's supernatural in a way historically accurate according to what the people believed at the time and staying true to historic supernatural beliefs? Idk if I'm explaining this right. Victorian era fiction turning out to have Victorian era style ghosts and seances is cool with me but not if it's inaccurate to the era

Have you read Mercedes Lackey's Elemental Masters series? Late Victorian British mages who often find themselves dealing with social issues of the era.
