But what if the story is billed from the start as historical/supernatural fiction? Or is it just mislabeling that's the problem?

My guess it's mislabeling or misrepresentation that's the problem. OP states upfront that they love supernatural fiction, so that's not the issue.

That's fine. Like I said, I enjoy supernatural fiction, too. I just don't like it when a book purports to be historical fiction and then there's a surprise supernatural element.
