I get why others don't want to be spoiled. What I don't get is the insistence that everyone should hate spoilers and the comments about those of us who like to be spoiled not knowing how to really enjoy something for the first time.

Or that we should embargo discussion about stuff for weeks or months at a time, mostly to accommodate people who time-shift their media.

It's a lot different for TV and movies IMO

This.

I just don't get why people who like spoilers can't just... politely contain their spoilers so people who don't want to see them won't? Like, spoiler tags. Easy to do. Everyone is happy.

Hard to define what counts as a spoiler and difficult to do on certain platforms. Much easier for people who don’t want to be spoiled to avoid fannish places.

What platforms in question?

On a place like f!s, it's easy as fuck. And it seems easy also to type "spoilers!" before going off in virtually any space.

Obviously if you don't want to be spoiled for something specific, like a new movie that just came out, you probably wouldn't want to hang around that movie's specific fan communities until you've seen it. But in a general fandom community, it's pretty dickish to just post random spoilers all the place.

This is absolutely what should be done if you avoid even the slightest hint of a spoiler like the plague.

I won't even watch trailers tbh. I want EVERYTHING to be a surprise lmfao so I stay the hell away from places that could so much as show a gif from a trailer.

In my experience most of them do? I certainly use spoiler tags. But there comes a point where, if you are so spoiler phobic that even a mention bothers you, that's on you and not the job of the internet to protect you. People want to talk about things. Just assume any discussion of something is going to have at least small spoilers.

That's not the case in my experience on the internet. There's more people who get so ultra defensive toward people who don't like spoilers they gleefully shove them around everywhere and tell the people who don't like them that they shouldn't be on the internet.

Most of them do. However, I've found that if I mention that I don't like spoilers there are always a few people who purposely go out of their way to spoil me. I'm generally very good about avoiding spoilers, because I know it is ultimately on me, but I'd love it if not only everyone used appropriate tags (not even just spoiler tags, but I'll settle for show tags, as I'll block shows that I don't want to be spoiled about at that moment), but also if there weren't people who decided that anyone who didn't like spoilers were idiots and fair game to spoil on purpose.

True, on the other hand, I've seen people complain about being "spoiled" a hundred comments deep into a discussion about critical reviews of works that have been out for almost a year.

Then that is on them. I use blocking liberally and have gotten good at flicking my eyes away as soon as I see the title of something I don't want to be spoiled for. And I'd definitely never complain about something a year old and/or within a discussion thread about something I don't want to be spoiled for. What tends to get me (other than people purposely spoiling me) are headlines, as they are made to be eye-catching. Well, and especially spoiler-y movie trailers that air before other movies I watch, as I'm kinda a captive audience for those.

If a link is labeled explicitly with the title of the book, movie, episode, or game being discussed, you don't have to click through. But I shouldn't have to sit a week (or more) to snark about Sunday's Star Trek in relationship to plot developments from two Sundays ago.

I knew a guy who put masking tape over a page in The Lord of the Rings before he loaned it out because he thought it had too much foreshadowing. Now that's dedication! Or... something.

That just makes me wince and feel bad for the poor book.
