I mean, it depends on context, but I can see how excessive gushing can turn you off of something. Hearing, "OH MY GOD THIS THING HAS THE BEST FEMALE CHARACTERS EVER YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON THE WORLD IF YOU DON'T WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT! WATCH IT!" can be REALLY off putting.

On the other hand. Someone saying, "Wow I really like the female characters in [thing]." once shouldn't put you off of it, imo.

Not OP but this is exactly it for me. The harder someone pushes something by focusing on ~representation~, the less interested I am in it. If they tell me I should watch it because it's a great and interesting show that also has well-written female characters, awesome, I'll probably check it out.

Yes, exactly this.

Unfortunately people can be like that, especially on tumblr. I basically saw posts telling people they had to watch Agent Carter, literally had to, because it was good female representation and if it didn't succeed it would be the fault of people who wanted more female characters but didn't watch it. I love female characters and they are something that can draw me into a fandom, so I appreciate being told about them, but that post pissed me off.

And especially if it's accompanied by "AND YOU'RE A TOTAL SEXIST MISOGYNIST IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT!!!" .... no I think I'll pass on that.
