What is the most disappointing meal you've eaten?

Bonus if it cost a lot.

This isn't extreme but last night we had Chicken Katsu Curry. It's this make it yourself kit from Tesco and it cost £8. It would have cost less than £5 to make twice as much if we'd bought the ingredients separately and gotten a recipe from the internet. But we like the idea of the meal kits and didn't mind the convenience charge if we were getting a good meal to try.

It was terrible. It was the kind of bland that Americans accuse all of our food of being. The broccoli tasted off, the rice hadn't been rinsed (the instructions said it had) so it came out extra starchy and gross, and the whole thing was just massively disappointing after we'd been really excited to try something new.

And then tonight's casserole didn't cook properly because apparently the slow cooker is dying. We're going to the pub tomorrow because I can't handle another failure in the kitchen this week.

if it's of any comfort I'm American and I know some Brits are excellent cooks, and not just because I watch GBBO all the time.

Got a fancy dinner at this French restaurant when I went to DC. It was Alpaca meat with some summer vegetables. It wasn't great. :(

I ordered a baked tilapia with avocado from Denny's once.

After 90 minutes, I got a half-baked tilapia with no avocado. I gave up and got scrambled eggs instead.

I think you were pretty brave to order fish from Denny's, period.

I had a vegetarian lasagna at an otherwise really nice restaurant that was completely disgusting, I ate what I could but lord it was awful. I have no idea what they put in it that made it taste so different to what I've had before but bleach. Never ordered it again in that place.

Normally dover sole is just amazing and divine and oh god I love that fish. Thing is, it costs between $70 - $80 for about 8 oz of it at a restaurant high class enough to have it.

It'd been about ten years since I last had it, so Mom decided to splurge for me at a normally fantastic bistro in Vegas.

I don't know where they got this fish, but uuuughhhhh... the cut was too thick, and I don't know if it was cooked too fast or something, but the texture was just all WRONG. And the sauce had congealed???

...all those years... longing... dreaming... for this...

Went away for a week to a holiday cottage with some friends/family, and thought for the last night there we'd splash out on a Thai takeaway. I eat meat but wasn't really in the mood for it that night so picked a vegetable stir-fry with oyster sauce.

Unfortunately the menu didn't specify that the vegetables were basically soggy cabbage (I think it was cabbage?) and bland onions. No mushrooms, peppers, sweetcorn or anything with any flavour. The sauce was halfway decent but there wasn't nearly enough of for the portion size. Everyone else had stuff with beef/chicken and it smelled awesome, so I pretty much sat there looking enviously at their plates, lol.

Ick. But a word of advice - don't order vegetable-only entrees from cultures that don't have much of a vegetarian tradition. It's just going to be the cheapest assortment of vegetables (cabbage, onion, carrots, bell peppers usually) in a sauce. It'll be a miracle if it tastes good, and it's likely to be really overpriced.

Sushi made with brown rice. Sushi should never be made with brown rice.

When I was a kid I went to a pancake restaurant with my mom when we were travelling. It wasn't a chain, but it made a huge deal out of pancakes and I love them so that sounded good. I ordered silver dollar pancakes and first they poured a bunch of apricot syrup over them without asking me if I liked it, which I don't. And then the pancakes were terrible. My mom said hers were terrible too. I don't get how they got any business.

I've had terrible pancakes at restaurants, too, and it's weird because pancakes should not be that difficult. When I make them at home, I don't even measure anything and I don't add sugar (although I may put chocolate chips or fruit in the batter) so I don't get why it would be hard for a restaurant, especially not one that serves breakfast everyday. I think sometimes the problem is they overdo it on the chemical leaveners.

As a vegetarian I've had some bloody hilarious meals served to me. Absolute peak was being served pasta with milk and raw courgette in France lolol.

The only time I've been disappointed instead of amused is when people who have invited me somewhere are arseholes about it. I went on holiday with a friend and her family who all knew I was a veggie. As everyone was sitting down to eat the first meal together, I was told by her mum that they'd put meat in everything including the salad and so I should go and make my own food in the kitchen and eat it there so as not to make everyone feel bad by eating a meat free meal in front of them.

That woman had some serious issues.

Holy crap. That's just shitty of them. If you've got someone over to visit and you know they have a particular diet and then go out of your way to make NOTHING they can eat? Wow.

(and in the case of salad...it's easy to leave out meat "topping" and just let people put in what they want if they want it. Seems like it was just malicious to do that in addition to the rest)

So every year when I was growing up my mom and I would go visit one of her childhood friends, and her taste in food, well, sucked. We went to a lot of buffets (she lived in Las Vegas) but once we went to a diner that she swore had amazing food. The menu boasted that they used fresh fruit cooked from scratch in everything, which was a load of bull. I ordered apple pie pancakes and got pancakes topped with lukewarm canned apple pie filling. My mom ordered something with strawberries that came with thawed frozen strawberries in syrup. I forget what my friend who came with us and my mom's friend ordered, but my friend was grossed out, too. Only my mom's friend was happy.
