Taking a class on basic household repair. Hope it's better than the last community ed class I took - the teacher was one of those people who clearly knows the subject well but isn't good at teaching it - e.g. not knowing where to start/not starting with the basics, not explaining things clearly, tossing out terms and acronyms without defining them, acting like people should already know what she's talking about (but if we did, why would we be here?), etc. It was like those dreams where you're suddenly taking a college class that you didn't sign up for - and you aren't even in college now - and you didn't do the reading.

I also need to finish cleaning my floor. I have a hard time getting my 70-year old linoleum/whatever kitchen floor clean and finally discovered through much trial and error that scrubbing it with baking soda and then mopping that up does the trick. This was after I tried mopping with water, mopping with floor cleaner, spraying on grease cutting spray and mopping, and finally getting down on my hands and knees with a scrubbing pad. I still use the scrubbing pad, but add the miracle ingredient baking soda. It scours the floor and now everything is so amazingly clean. I finished the kitchen last weekend but I need to do the hallway. I didn't think the hallway was that bad, but now that the kitchen is actually, properly clean, you can really see how dirty the hall is. I'm so glad the rest of the apartment has wood or tile floors. I never have a hard time keeping those clean.

Maybe I will also bake something, since it's getting cool enough.

I wish I had floors. I hate trying to keep carpeting clean.

I wish I had floors.

For a second I pictured a home with bare joists suspended over a bottomless void.

I hope the class goes well. My sister and I were actually thinking of taking a similar class! Though possibly for woodworking. Depends on what the local tech school is offering.

How often to you clean your floors? I am glad you found a good solution to cleaning it.

I used to try to clean the kitchen floor on a weekly basis, but since mopping it seemed to do nothing, I started slacking off because it felt like such a losing battle. I would mop it when there were obvious spills and footprints, and use the grease cleaner method when certain areas got really dirty (because that seemed to help a bit), but the latter didn't happen very often. Last weekend was the first time I used baking soda. I definitely do not want to put that much work into it frequently, so I'm trying to preserve the clean by mopping the most heavily used areas semi-nightly and I bought a mat for inside the kitchen door so I track less dirt in. We'll see how it goes.
