Weirdest thing you've found when shopping?

[personal profile] syncing_feeling 2017-10-21 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
While I was away for a week in a tiiiiny seaside town I spent ages looking in all the tacky tourist gift shops, the ones that sell fridge magnets and mugs and postcards and such. Was trying to pick out a necklace, turned my head a bit and there was a massive shelf of golliwogs. Like I've seen them in antique toy shops/museums but these looked like brand new ones off a factory line, in three different sizes. I was floored. Everything else there was cutesy by-the-numbers tourist stuff, then bam. I didn't know shops could still sell these?

So much racist stuff in this one antique store I went to. So. Much. I wish I had pics of them still.

I really can't think of anything super weird though.

I can't believe there are still places comfortable circulating this kind of stuff. I just found their website and I'm so tempted to get in touch and ask them what the fuck their excuse is. :/

This exact same thing happened to me on a walking holiday in Keswick. I'd have thought it was the same shop if you hadn't said seaside. Apparently there's more than one of them. O_o

It's a really jarring experience isn't it? I actually stumbled on an article about that place the other night, I was trying to see if anyone had mentioned the one I went to. I'm in Cornwall and the ones in that article look the exact same as the ones I saw. Ugh.

a discount grocery store was selling a frozen appetizer called, I am not making this up, "shrimp wings".

I bought vanilla hummus yesterday. I haven't tried it yet.

I work at Goodwill, so every day is a weird shopping adventure, tbh

A book of actual photos of mutilated bodies, by someone who really liked photos of mutilated bodies. I would have thought they were fake but there weren't that many photos and there was a lot of commentary on where the author had first seen them and why he liked them, so I'm pretty sure they were real. Also this was a long time ago, before photoshop existed. You could still fake pictures but not as easily and cheaply as now. So yeah, I think they were real and it freaked me the fuck out.

What the actual fuck. That's horrible and confusing as hell. What publisher picked that up??

I have no idea. I don't remember looking at the publisher and it may even have been self-published. I didn't find it in a regular bookstore - it was a little store attached to an art gallery. The art gallery was weird but not weird like that book.

Sorry that was a rhetorical, wtf question. I didn't expect you to actually know the publisher of some random book you once saw. :)

That's very weird and disturbing. :/

Was it Naked City, by Weegee? It's a really famous book and photographer.

Weegee was the original police-scanner hounding crime media photographer. The film Nightcrawler is inspired by him.

No, I'm sure it wasn't that. I don't think the person who wrote the book took the photos, and they weren't New York City crime photos. It was more a fetish book than a photography book.
