You're not playing it wrong, it's a game that's meant to be played however you want. But if you genuinely want to play a different way and just have trouble sticking to it, have you tried any challenges? There are the basic ones like the legacy challenge, but there are some other ones that are about challenging yourself to play sims with undesirable traits or with goals that might not win them many friends in your neighborhood, or even just challenging yourself to play odd storylines that wouldn't crop up during your normal gameplay.
