Jury duty question

(Anonymous) 2017-10-25 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I was recently called for jury duty but not selected. Am I allowed to tell people what the case was, or still sworn to secrecy?

I think what you can't give are names or details that would make the specific people identifiable? I could be wrong, though.

I think you can discuss it, since you aren't an actual juror. I'm not a lawyer tho, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

If it's a pretty mundane case that isn't going to be in the news and what you say woudln't identify the specific case or people, I don't see the harm. The fact that you would want to tell people about it suggests it's not that mundane, so I don't know.

The one time I came close to being in a jury, the case was this couple who had hired a guy to do some construction work and they said he didn't finish what he'd agreed to do and he said they refused to pay what they'd agreed so he wasn't going to finish the job, and nobody finds that interesting.

I think once you were eliminated from the jury pool, you can talk about the case since you likely didn't get a lot of information that would have come out in court at trial.

Depends on the specific circumstances. Probably not though. The whole juries sworn to secrecy thing is more about the fact they're their among themselves alone to find guilt as a group. They can't go out their discussing it or announcing things about it, when that will inevitably lead to not jury members providing input.

You're probably okay since you weren't selected. When I was in grand jury I was sworn to secrecy, but after three years I started letting things spill because some of the cases were so interesting.
