So he wasn't in the first season? I meant to watch last year but just kinda forgot, now I'm seeing the adverts and he is the main reason now that I want to watch. I can catch up on this season easily if I skip the first, just trying to decide if I should or if I should play catch up next summer when both seasons are readily available for bingeing.

He's not in the first season. It's probably okay to skip it too. Only one of the storylines this season is really connected to the last (the one regarding the church), but you will be fine with the main storyline.
