90% of ALL fucking media is cliches and fanservice and nerd bullshit. We just remember the good stuff.

Sure. And there's definitely a feedback loop between the material realities of anime production (where an enormous amount of anime seems to be made and targeted specifically towards teenage nerds and/or hardcore otaku), and the realities of anime fandom where anime fans preferentially choose to watch and talk about enormously stupid and cliched shit and so that's what gets surfaced to me.

But at the same time, my experience is that, even with things that I hear about from people that I know to be smart, and that are supposed to be, you know, legitimately good, those things are still chock-full of unbelievable bullshit that insults my intelligence. It feels like, more than with most other mediums or genres, those things are treated as being par for the course with anime.

If you're normally as pretentious as this makes you sound, I would assume it's easy for anything to insult your intelligence because you estimate your intelligence to be so very high.

Relax. Some people like things you don't, for fun.

I like stupid mindless action fun as much as I like serious stuff. And I'd really like to like anime, that's the thing. Just, like, less blatant masturbation fantasies, first of all.

I am sure that someone out there thinks the tropes of the niche you like, or your pet favorite literary tropes, are unbelievable bullshit that insults their intelligence. But to be like "well, anon is otherwise smart, but really, his niche tropes which he knows are niche are insultingly dumb" is being an ass.

That being said, if all you're seeing in every anime is blatant masturbation fantasies, I'd say you're getting recs from the wrong people or about the wrong subjects. I can name tons of anime off the top of my head that have no masturbation fantasies whatsoever. Practically all of Ghibli for one.

If you're going "that doesn't count as anime" then it seems that you've defined "anime" as "the things you don't like" and maybe it's your definition of anime that should be broader.

Like, I'm not even a fan of anime, but dismissing all anime as skeevy porn is the same as dismissing all Western comics, all of them, indie and serious and sci-fi too, as skeevy cheesecake just because the most popular superhero comics have problems with that. Problems exist but like the first anon said... they do in every medium, and anime is a medium like every other one.

it's really anime TV series that I have the biggest problem with. Theatrical anime has some legit things, manga is pretty wide-open presumably due to the fact that it's super cheap to make. Although even there you get your Usagi Drops.

And I agree that it's not anything intrinsic to the medium, IMO it's a consequence of the costs of production and the business models and the tastes of the people making and consuming it. At the same time, it really seems much more omnipresent than stuff in superhero fandom, especially from the point of view of the fandom's preferences and what the fandom primarily cares about.

I just get really tired of hearing about stuff and "oh this is really good" and then whoops it's awful again. Only so many times I can keep giving things a try.

I get do where you're coming from. I'm not an anime fan but I have a lot of friends who are and most of the mainstream series they're into, I'm not into for the same reasons. But keep in mind anime itself is niche. You can't compare it to Hollywood movies. The audience for most mainstream episodic anime is probably the same as for YA, for example. Which suffers a lot of the same badness.

Most other media and genres can be described in the same way, because there's no need for sexual content for it to be a blatant masturbation fantasy that sells, and many creators are into creating their own fantasies.

I meant "masturbatory fantasies" in a much more direct and non-metaphorical sense here

I think there's a useful distinction between general power fantasies and, like, actual sexual objectified masturbatory fantasies

Oh, so you're judging anime just based on some of it's genres? Or it's because the fanservice? Because there's no such thing as fanservice in western media, not at all /s

I think it is dramatically more pervasive in TV anime series than in most other mediums I can think of, at least over the past 10 years or so. That's my whole point.

And there's also a bunch of other dumb writing and cliches, it's just easier to account for that as being stupid dumb fun, especially with like shonen and stuff

So... what was the last Hollywood movie that didn't have hot women wearing revealing clothes?

And "dumb writing" can be perfect for things like The Walking Dead, and clichés is like, the middle name of most shows on tv, and movies, and books...

All the stuff you supposedly hate is just as present in all other media, even if with a slightly different cultural flavor.
