I'm on Twitter too much because by now I've seen 3 or 4 different cycles of Barb fandom and backlash

That said, you're basically right, but I still really like Barb and think she was well done. It was just a really perfect depiction of a specific kind of anxiety in a way that's rarely done so well and that a lot of people related to, and then the character died so it felt really tragic.

I have no idea why people care about her so much. I never will understand.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of the internet sees themselves in her (mousy, awkward, reserved, ignored by the popular clique) and was vicariously pissed that she was fridged while the (80's stereotype of) popular, pretty Nancy got to kill monsters and was not altogether broken that she was missing.

You don't have to dislike Nancy to like Barb, though. They're both just teenagers. Don't think it needs to be framed as Nancy vs Barb at all.

Not at all. But that was pretty much the vibe I got re #JusticeforBarb, that Nancy didn't look long or hard enough. Not that she could have, really, what with Barb being sucked into a parallel dimension! But people like to stretch.

Nancy cared (she was that was worried she was missing). But that kind of stuff gets thrown to the wayside when there is a monster trying to murder you and a child with superpowers.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Nancy was the only person who cared

Yeah, that part was weird. Her family seemed to barely notice she was gone.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
As far as the evidence they had went, she'd driven to the bus station. Also, the one time we saw her mom, it was like...the day after? So no time had passed.

I think that was very much an 80s thing though. A pre-teen goes missing and it's stranger danger! An older teen goes missing and it's sex, drugs, and trouble at home!

She was a nice-enough character honestly, but not one I was overly invested in to the point where I needed to pretend she wasn't dead. She didn't deserve to die from wanna-be Silent Hill monster but I don't get the sheer fannish devotion to her either.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
She's a dumpy teenage girl with no friends, places like tumblr and ontd eat that up like catnip

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Go back to r/incels, hunty

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Don't even know what that means but I assume my description hit hard, bb.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
This was not a nice way of putting it, but I do think it's fairly accurate.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Kind of the same reason a generation of nerd girls were, or still are, obsessed with Hermione.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's not why people are obsessed with Hermione at all.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought she'd be a bigger deal, too. Instead she's kind of an afterthought at best.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-26 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
In addition to inverting the "teens who have sex get killed" trope, it seemed she was there to underscore Nancy's movement out of the Nerd Circle and into the Cool Bad Kids circle once she started dating Steve.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get it either.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
TBF she is kind of the "small character big impact" type - her disappearance is the entire reason Nancy gets involved with trying to figure out what's going on, and why she reaches out to Jonathon for help.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have any strong feelings about Barb, other than the show coincidentally got a lot better after she died.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Not entirely coincidentally -- Barb disappearing gave Nancy a plotline beyond the 90210 crap with Steve and his friends.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-27 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
She was a small part but she struck a chord with a lot of people, as the nerdy chick with a more-attractive friend. I'm just really here to say one thing: I really only saw the Barb Fandom that arose as starting to low-key shame Nancy. One of the only traits she clearly had was being a really fucking good friend - when EVERYTHING about Steve made him look like 100% fuckboy and Nancy was too smitten to see those signs, Barb was going "UM HELLO he only wants to get in your pants, dude!" (I loved that that turned out not to be the case and Steve legitimately liked her, but it did look like the other thing and Barb was trying to warn her.) And then when Nance begged her to come to his house with her, she went, even though she had no interest in any of the people there, just to be Nancy's emotional backup. Barb was an absolutely solid bro and that's another reason it was sad when she died
