I can't say it has never crossed my mind, when reading the Korean Lezhin comics, that if some atrocity happened they'd just stop. Obviously I recognized that this is practically meaningless in the bigger picture, but nonetheless, it is one of the few direct connections I have to that part of the world. Same with Japan, when NK was threatening to nuke them. Anime and manga would just stop.

human brains are not really built to understand global scope or have enough resources to care about millions/billions far away

you care about things that are part of your life and that you have emotional investment in, which is healthy and normal; your interests are wide-ranging enough beyond your own community that you do have connections with far-flung parts of the world that allow a far-away tenuous situation to feel real and human to you, and that's actually pretty cool

tldr forgive yourself for not being a limitless angel of compassion and performative fear. it doesn't matter why you care, and it's not petty or selfish to have personal interests that are important to you and capable of having an impact

I wanted to post a similar comment, but you beat me to it. Glad someone said it.

Yeah, you beat me to saying something similar.

This sounds utterly normal to me.

I'm guessing you don't live in the USA then? Because you know, they could head that way too.

Why are you talking about it in the past tense, as if either of the dumbfucks in charge had a change of heart?
