157. But.. You don't need Epona to finish the game. You can use the hookshot to get to Gerudo Valley. o-o

But you don't need that to finish the game, either. I've been playing the game since it came out, and I've only finished the game using the Biggoran sword once or twice.

Epona makes the game go by a lot faster, but I don't think she's actually needed to finish the game. You don't need her to jump the Lake Hylia fence, because you can warp point there. You don't need her to get to Gerudo Valley, because of the hookshot/longshot. So having her is certainly nice and helpful, but she's not necessary.
