(Same anon) In the books she does actually have one long-term but non-monogamous relationship with a married man. There's some... rather unfortunate implications of her being a concubine to a Civilised Chinaman stereotype, which sucks because the author does some AMAZING historical worldbuilding outside of this. So there are also book fans who want to see THAT relationship, which was never going to happen in the series because of medium differences. (With 50 minutes per episode and 8-13 episodes a season, any recurring love interest has to serve other purposes in the narrative for time reasons, hence hooking her up with the police officer who is also investigating the cases)

(Me again) I'm not the secret maker, btw. Just an idiot who managed to post accidentally TWICE while trying to reply. The bit quoted about the extra scene is why I'm presuming this is about the ships/non-ships. The Phryne/Jack shippers were instrumental to getting teh third series made and teh production company knew they'd have to tap into that enthusiasm, but for the non-shippers I can imagine that "We doubled our goal in about two days! Here's something you feel will ruin the series" was rather off-putting.
