Normally I don't read the comments on these posts because I could care less and mostly read F!S to find the few ones that amuse me...(ie 110, Data/Lore ftw!) but for fucking seriously?

The response #149 has caused reminds me why I stay away from fandom at large. Words are not just words. If someone makes a call to stop using hate speech, you'd think there would be a generally supportive response, not half of the people just going 'boo double standards!'. If the 149 OP wants to reclaim a hateful slur for their own use, then fine - personally, yeah, I think not using the word at all is better, but that's just me.

The main thing is, if you're gay or bi or an ally or what-the-fuck-ever, why would you be using the word 'faggot' as a catch-all random insult anyway? If I see someone use it, I assume they're a homophobic jerkface. And if I see other people in a space where it's being used, and not condemning it, I assume they're okay with homophobia.

Congratulations, fandom! You're fucking classy!

I don't personally use any slurs even in a reclaiming context for groups I'm part of, except in rare cases. But I have seen some gay men identify as "faggot," and that's fine. That's reclaiming. Calling a feminine gay man "faggot" as an insult, however, is not, and not okay in my book no matter who uses it.

But seriously, the responses here as a whole are so depressing.

Exactly. There's absolutely nothing wrong with reclaiming a word that's been used as an attack against you as a thing of pride - it's not something I personally choose to do, but I would never attack someone for doing it.

Okay, I've been admittedly snarky in my replies so far, but I'll be serious for a second here.

The main thing is, if you're gay or bi or an ally or what-the-fuck-ever, why would you be using the word 'faggot' as a catch-all random insult anyway?

Speaking as a gay female here, with many many friends both gay and straight that use the term "faggot". The thing is, not a single one of us uses it in an insulting manner. Therefore, it's not a "catch-all random insult". It's a greeting, or an affectionate name if anything.

Of course I'm not saying that using words like "faggot" is okay if you mean it with any sort of ill intent. But that's a really slippery slope. If we're going to get up in arms over "faggot" and "nigger", then we have to assume every single person who says that something is "retarded" is an insensitive asshole that hates mentally-challenged people. And so on and so on.

I do agree that sometimes words aren't just words. But at the same times, words aren't static, and their meaning changes based on context.

I'm not trying to criticize anyone who reclaims 'faggot' as a positive word - I don't use it myself, but I do identify as queer, which is a reclaimed word itself.

The problem is, it's the internet - context is often lacking, and it can be hard to tell if there is 'ill intent'. The few times in fandom that I've run into people "throw[ing] around the word 'faggot'", it sure hasn't looked like a group of people who know how hurtful the word can be and are consciously choosing to use it in a positive context instead.

If we're going to get up in arms over "faggot" and "nigger", then we have to assume every single person who says that something is "retarded" is an insensitive asshole that hates mentally-challenged people.

I really, really hate it when people say something is 'retarded'. And yeah, I do think they're insensitive if they do.
