Re: 111
Half the fun to me is being able to enjoy fandom, and it was rather difficult to do so back then, especially on mailing lists. I remember someone actually being banned from a list when they said 1xR was their OTP. Which was crazy, but not a single person said so when it happened, and I left the ML in disgust after that.
All in all, the GWing fandom has never presented itself as inviting to anyone who might not be in it for the shounen-ai fanbase, and that's a shame, because the show in of itself is rather fun to watch.
Re: 111
The parts of fandom I was in were the GWML, the starting up of the GW Addiction archive, Spandex and Braids and its later version, and a few minor 1x2 specialised sites and lists (the SDDI started up around that time too). In those places bashing wasn't allowed, not of any character, nor in the discussions (mostly in the mailing lists).
I remember someone actually being banned from a list when they said 1xR was their OTP.
If this was the only thing they said, it sure was crazy. If she did it on a yaoi ML pairing up Heero with a male character, stating how OOC it really was for him to be with someone but Relena, and all around complaining about how the awful, OOC yaoi is taing over everything... well. I have no idea what actually happened, so I won't judge. But that's the general reaction I used to get from non-yaoi fans, and the opinion still of some het fans (jsut look at the anti-yaoi secret a couple of days ago and the reactions to it).
Even though I've always kept to the yaoi parts of the fandom I've rarely seen the kind of hate people keep talking about, and it certainly havent been the general opinion since Shirin's days. It's hard to have an OTP that almost disappears in the enormous amount of fic for a pairing you don't like. I know, it's happened in several fandoms for me too. Bashing the fans for that pairing, or worse, all the fans of a particular type of pairing, won't accomplish anything but making those fans really annoyed, though. People like what they like.
