My problem with calling it a "double standard" is the suggestion that such a term holds of "all things being equal." Double standards are rejected, generally, because they uphold an inequitable situation -- i.e. that it's wrong for you to steal my property, but right for me to steal yours. The underlying assumption, of course, is that we are on equal terms to begin with, and the double standard has made things inequitable.

The thing with terms that are sexist, homophobic, and racist is that they speak to an already inequitable situation -- a man can call me a "cunt," for example, and in so doing, he is speaking from an entire system that allows him to use this word in a derogatory manner to make me feel disempowered. Calling him a dick will never have the same force. If I want to use "cunt" as a word that my girlfriends and I use for fun, so as to reclaim it and try to take some of that power back, that's a different situation. Of course, what will happen, is that a whole bunch of men will start using it as much as possible, and then get all hurt that they can't use any word they want, and start complaining that isn't this just an example of the double standard at work? Cause privileged groups? Get butthurt real fast.
