I love you for this ♥ WELL SAID, RANDOM INTERNATE SANEPERSON, WELL SAID.

And yeah, I especially agree with the last point- I'm an atheist and I still say "goddamn it," "oh my god," and "Jesus!" when I'm fed up with something, but I don't have any baggage attached to it- it's just words that I'm used to saying, and I don't see the point in censoring myself just because I don't believe in God, when I don't have to prove anything to myself and never have to prove anything to anyone else. :/

What WTF'd me the most about this secret is the weirdness of what the OP is saying- they seem to be implying that as long as that person is gay, a total stranger can call them a faggot to their face and it's fine, but if a close friend of theirs interrupts their fangirling/fanboying to go "lol you faggot" and not mean it in any sort of insulting way, it's still OMG OFFENSIVE just because they're not gay themselves- like it's some kind of code word in a weird club. It's not a club, it's just a fact of some people's lives, and words only mean what definition we personally attach to them.

I don't know if they're NECESSARILY implying that they would go and just call another gay person a fag to their face whether they knew them or not. I think that's a lot to take from thar one line, smart-ass as it was. Some gay people who use "fag" do so ironically (y'know, like some straight people) and would HOPEFULLY know when it's appropriate or when it's not (DITTO STRAIGHT PEOPLE AGAIN) so yeah bottom line is that it shouldn't matter.

I hope the OP can come up with something new that's as catchy as "fag-hag" if straight people aren't allowed to use that word anymore though. :(

(Same person here, but a lazy person, so not logging outta this account. XD;)

Oh, I don't mean that the OP would! I mean that the logical extent of their secret, which is saying it's perfectly okay to use the word if you're gay but totally, immediately offensive if you're not, is that if someone they didn't know walked up, started a little bit of a conversation, revealed that they were gay, and then when they were still pretty much strangers said something like, "oh, you fag!" it would be fine. But if a friend of theirs, someone they knew but who happened to be straight, said the same thing in the exact same way, suddenly it's OPPRESSHUN. I agree, I don't see how that possibly works.

Hahaha, I kinda hate that term, personally, though I don't care if other people say it. I've just seen it tossed around too easily, and too negatively- implying that because I like slash and such I'll obviously turn into a "fag-hag" in real life and be miserable forever because I won't be able to have a normal relationship but will instead moon over gay guys eternally. ... IT SOUNDS KIND OF LIKE SOME REALLY FAILGET ALTERNA-SPECIES OF VAMPIRE.

I agree, well said. Word usage is all about time and place, who is using and when, and what context.

I am a Christian, and when people "misue" "God" and "Jesus," it does bother me a bit, but I'm not about to ask you, J-Random person on the Internet, to stop if those words have a different context to you. Now, if you were a good Internet friend and you AIMed me all the time and used those words around me all the time, I'd ask you to "try to refrain" from that kind of speech around me, if you could, out of respect for me as a friend, but since you're an Internet nobody, I don't care what you say.

To you, "God" and "damn" are things without actual meaning, so as long as you aren't going around saying or *implying* "All Christians are stupid!" "All people who believe in God should drop dead!" or "Christians/Jews/Muslims shouldn't have the same RIGHTS as others" I'm not going to get angry. Though, I do wonder *why* athesists use "g-damn" and such, when "God is without meaning" -- it's like if I were to start saying "Bhuddadammit!" or something and "Zeusdammit" would just sound stupid. Still, it's quibbling over words, so I'll just scratch my head and say "Carry on."

"Faggot" is something that does carry more meaning in our society, though - Unless someone is using it around people they *know* they won't offend, it's just not an insult to use to J-Random Stranger, because it is connected to predjudice and carries a very cruel weight.

Why am I thinking of Uncle Rukkus from "The Boondocks" right now? - He uses "Nigger" in a VERY derogatory manner, very intentionally, but he's black.

Oh, and Just to Head Things Off at the Pass...

Before anyone sees the word "Christian" and thinks "Privilaged Oppressor" or anything like that, in my regard to wanting people not to deny Deist equal rights...

Er, I'm one of those (maybe were not common?) independant Christians who thinks that *everyone* ought to have the same rights under the law and in society, if you know what I mean. No one should worry about getting beat for kissing their sweetie in public, or worry about being able to get a house, etc.
