The time I might have seen a ghost (a true story that's more creepy than outright scary)

Years ago, when I was still living at my parents house, I was home alone one afternoon. It was a warm, overcast day in early autumn, so I had the front door open, but the glass storm door was closed. I was in the kitchen, and from there I could see out the front door and down our front walk all the way to the street. I happened to glance out the door, and I see a sheriff's deputy walking up the front walk. To this day, when I close my eyes and imagine him it's like I'm looking at a photograph, that was how clear it was. He was tall and kind of stocky, white guy with a ruddy complexion. He was wearing the typical sheriff's uniform, khaki shirt and dark olive pants. I saw the silver badge on his chest, and the walkie-talkie and gun on his hip. There was a somber expression on his face and he was looking down as he removed his hat. I remember he had center-parted, feathered brown hair.

I was startled to see a cop walking up to my house, and I kind of panicked, and ducked over to the other side of the kitchen out of sight. I was pretty sure he hadn't seen me, but it was obvious that someone was home, as the door was open and lights and the stereo were on, so I knew I'd have to answer the door. Like I said, I wasn't expecting the police and it's not usually a good thing when they come to your house, you know? So I clear my throat and get ready to go to the door, and I wait for him to knock or ring the doorbell. And I wait. And wait. And nothing happens. So I peek out of the kitchen and look out the front door, and there's nobody there.

By this time it's been a good minute or so since I first saw him, so I thought he was somewhere on the porch or maybe had walked around to the back door. I went to the door and opened it, and looked out onto the porch. Nothing. I walk to the end of the front porch, the back door in view, and call, "Hello...?". No answer, and there's not a soul around but me. Our dog isn't barking, it's quiet.

I walk down the front walk and look up and down the street, a view of about a block and a half in either direction. Not a soul, no cop car, nothing. By this time I've got the serious heebie-jeebies and go back in the house, closing the front door and locking it behind me. And no sheriff's deputy ever came to the door. But he sure looked like he had some bad news to deliver. It's been years, and I still think about that incident, and wonder if my mind was playing tricks n me, or if I really saw a ghost.
