So it seems like a lot of the problems that people have come from surfing the tags, and it makes me wonder - what about if you just didn't surf the tags

So they have to carefully curate their dashboard to prevent following drama llamas otherwise if they see drama it's their own fault for doing it wrong, which means they probably aren't going to have all their fandoms as evenly represented on their dash as they'd like. But they can't go find posts about those fandoms in the tags, because then if they see drama it's their own fault for doing it wrong.

AYRT

I'm not trying to blame anyone for anything! It's just a hypothetical question that the poster made me think of.

It's just that it's a pretty silly hypothetical IMO. Obviously you would see fewer wanky posts if you never browsed tags and didn't follow anyone, and you'd never get involved in wank if you never posted or responded to posts. But at that point, why bother having an account?

nayrt, but aren't the tags supposed to help you find things? If you don't surf the tags, how do you find relevant content? I am not a Tumblr user, so forgive me if the question is silly.

You can't, really, which is why anon's hypothetical is silly at best. I mean, yeah, I do follow a few blogs that mostly re-blogs specific fandom stuff, but they don't necessarily catch everything in that tag.

Generally if I'm interested in a topic, I want to follow the topic including any potentially interesting newcomers who are not picked up by my FOAF network.
