[Star Trek Voyager]

...you know, I can see it. The thick make-up makes her lips look broader, and the borg facepiece squishes her nose a little bit, and images of bald women in western cinema are usually black (especially before Evee and Furiosa, which Voyager would have been). Race is a weird thing, and a couple tiny cues threw you off.

There's something about the makeup, yeah.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not even know how you're getting "I can see it!" responses to this. I'l give tiny you the benefit of the doubt for a shitty TV, but anyone else? JFC people, black folk don't have a monopoly on big lips and this is clearly a white person.

I want to be clear that my response had ---nothing--- to do with "big lips". It's specifically the skin tone with the makeup for me - it looks like someone with darker skin wearing white makeup. That's the only aspect of it I can see.

This. May some folks need to get their eyes checked. I'll forgo OP since they were a child, but the rest of you... SERIOUSLY?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-02 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you considered that they're saying "I see it" not in the sense that she actually looks black, but in the sense that they can see what aspects of the makeup job etc. made little OP think she looked black in low res?

first responder and yeah, that's how i meant it.

not 'she looks soooo black' but 'there are a few details here that I would normally associate with black faces'. I wouldn't have thought of it without the secret, I don't think, but when I looked for it they were there. It doesn't quite look like a natural face for ANYONE, and deliberately so for scifi, and depending on the lighting/res/etc, I can understand how someone's brain could try to resolve it and make that wrong leap.
