It's not just the movie that bastardizes the things I love about Tolkien; it inundates all of fandom and the public consciousness too, which really makes me sad.
That is exactly why I don't want a movie or series based on my favourite books. It's practically soul crushing when you love this thing and want to share it and talk about it and revel in your love for it but everyone else fell in love with a derivation and are proudly ignorant about the original which you love so much.

It goes the other way sometimes. I was introduced to the Master and Commander books through the movie. And I like the movie fine but the books? Daaaaaaaamn they're good.
