Re: Did anyone check out Doki Doki Literature Club yet? (no spoilers)

I'm downloading it out of morbid curiosity, but I hate jump scares. I don't really like being scared at all, actually (I like creepy and dark, but I don't want to feel paranoid that someone/something is going to murder me in my sleep). Should I stop the download?

For me it wasn't so much scary as it was disturbing, I guess is the best way to put it. There's suicide and self-harm, lots of psychological mind-fuckery... Basically after the first part I was like holy fuck what am I playing but then I kept thing because of the story. But it's worth checking out.

SPOILERS

It depends — yes, there’s the dark themes mentioned in this thread, but one comment that had the creator update tags and horror warnings was from a player whose anxiety was triggered by some of the meta content of the game, specifically by things that appear to threaten or focus directly on them. If that’s not for you, then this probably isn’t.

The visual/audio scares are imo 99% either noticeably worked up to, with cues something’s going to pop up, and/or they are more low-key (not screamer-like). There are a couple truer jump scares with specific conditions afaik (one is if you stream gameplay, another is if you play a specific route after a certain point).

Mild spoilers in previous post!!!

SA oh uh just re-read the “no spoilers” thread topic... apologies to OP since I can’t edit, though it’s more for general content than specific plot.

OP

Oh haha I meant there was no spoilers in my comment, not that the thread had to be spoiler -free :)

Ayrt — ah, whew! Thanks :)

The glitching and the breaking of the fourth wall was what really got to me, especially when it started messing with my choices/not letting me click the buttons/etc.

Worse still? During Monika's confession I was playing IN THE DARK. And that's when I noped the hell out and turned off the computer.

Like the others said, it really depends. When the game starts up there's a warning screen that you have to click on before proceeding with the game, if that's any indication of how disturbing it is. As far as gameplay, it's a short VN, maybe 3-4 hours to finish tops, and it opens like your standard romance. I was literally clicking along thinking "when is this going to get scary?" and then...it just hits like a ton of bricks. As far as the disturbing content goes, it's really disturbing. Like, there's a pretty graphic scene that ends up popping up again in a really freaky way, and there are cut-to-black moments that genuinely creeped me out

The bottle poem really disturbed me. As did the begging/blaming when it was cut to black. And MONIKA omfg. Definitely not for the faint of heart
