I thought the sex was supposed to be a contrast between the sexual violence exhibited by the killers. It also shows how Holden is being effected by what he is learning throughout the series (he becomes more obsessed with proving he isn't vanilla).

But maybe I was reading it wrong. :O

I thought it had it's place, and yeah, i was *very* happy to see some female pleasure and a guy actually going down.
'Stop stopping!' was one of my favorite lines.

I think it's supposed to be startling, giving the viewers a taste of the startling contrasts the detectives are living with: being humans with normal sex lives and feelings constantly getting close up with sick and twisted acts and psychos.

Are those contrasts actually all that startling in this specific genre of fiction anymore, though? It feels like it's just the same narrative we've seen a million times before, just with more explicit sex. Which is why it felt gratuitous to me (not OP).

But were the scenes explicit though? We saw some knees and heard them talking about it, but there weren't anything really explicit visible on the screen, if I remember it right.
