CW: Spacey

The Spacey story is turning into a bottomless pile of suck.

Feeling extra grindy this week.

I'm honestly surprised it's actually having an impact on his career. He always plays creeps and villains... it's not like with Mel Gibson, whose vibe was usually "charming hero" until being revealed as a shitbag irl, thus soiling his onscreen persona.

Why would who he plays matter? To me, it makes American Beauty so much worse. I mean, I can kind of see how it might seem worse if an actors' roles as good characters influence people towards trusting them more, but anyone taking advantage or harming others is bad and people should absolutely condemn it, no matter who does it.

Mel Gibson is in Daddy's Home 2, which I think opens next week, and has a few talk show appearances scheduled, so apparently you can b a racist, sexist shitbag and still get work in Hollywood. Although it'll be interesting to see if Spacey's career is destroyed completely because his victims are young men, or if, like Gibson, he'll get to be in movies again in a few years.

Spacey's acting career has been secondary to his role as a producer/director for a few decades now. CNN reported that a half-dozen production staff members of House of Cards reported sexual harassment from Spacey, and a there are even more reports from the Old Vic.

His reputation among movie audiences is less important right now than his reputation among the producers and investors who control the cash, and if what happened with House of Cards is any indication, they're sick and tired of covering for a serial rapist and harasser.

EDIT: A serial rapist and harassers who probably is going to be facing multiple lawsuits and/or criminal charges soon.

Especially since under American labor law, covering up for Spacey's behavior makes his co-producers jointly liable.

EDIT: Shutting down House of Cards in under 48 hours has less to do with audience outrage and more to do with Stacey's co-producers throwing him under the bus to avoid ending up in the courtroom with him.

He's already named the person he alleges raped him as a boy.
