Shapeshifters and Genderfluid

(Anonymous) 2017-11-03 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Not quite a complaint, but...

I've noticed a lot recently this push to refer to shapeshifter characters (specifically Loki) as genderfluid and I just don't get it? Shapeshifting has always fell more like a skill or tool than an identification to me, so maybe that's why?

I believe that genderfluid (or maybe just flexible) is comics "canon." But since it's Marvel and he's not exactly an a-list villain/antihero/villain/antihero, that's absolutely meaningless and can be retconned away tomorrow.

No, I get that. I'm more confused about why does shapeshifter = genderfluid now?

Well, at least one version of Loki says that Loki is. And then there's questions about Xavin's inability to just pass as one human gender, which Whedon chose to shit all over in his brief run.

On the other hand, I think Mystique consistently defaults to female when she's not "on the job." So it's not universal.

Who else besides Loki? Because it seems like a lot of the time shapeshifter characters are very big on "I'm BeastBOY and I'll shapeshift into a MALE Lion, and a MALE peacock, and a MALE rooster, and a MALE ...."

But then some shifter characters are very "I may chose to shift into a dude, I may chose to shift into a lady, whichever I feel like!" And if they do that it does open up the question on if they're a transvestite or agender/genderfluid or whatever.

Mystique?

I think mythological Loki easily counts as genderfluid and maybe uh, species-fluid? I mean, he had sex and gave birth while in the form of a mare. That’s a hell of a commitment. I don’t think shapeshifter would automatically equal genderfluid, though. I can just see the case for Loki.

See, I've never seen myth Loki identifying himself as anything other than cis male. The whole horse thing never felt like Loki meant to have sex with Svaðilfari, he just thought he could out run the horse. Even the time Loki took the form of a milkmaid and had sex with/gave birth to a bunch of dwarfs never read as him being genderfluid to me. More that he's just one kinky son of a bitch!

I agree that shapeshifting and genderfluid identity are different things, but I don't see why a fictional character can't be both? And I think that's the case with Loki, or at least one valid interpretation that people are adopting.

I don't actually see Loki as genderfluid and I think they only push that narrative to jump on the "look how at all this diversity we put in our comics now" hype train. It's more that he doesn't care about "gender" and oh well, if he's playing the role of a woman for his trickery, whatever. That's the case for myth Loki as well. Trying to retroactively apply a genderfluid identity on him is pretty silly.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think genderfluid means

Re: Shapeshifters and Genderfluid

(Anonymous) 2017-11-04 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
A fluctuating dysphoria strong enough to force a person to identify as female or male depending in which direction it fluctuates in. Very, very few people are actually genderfluid.
A shapeshifter shifting shapes for shits and giggles instead of an an inner need to and just referring to themselves as the presenting gender out of ease or because they dont really care (which in the case of myth Loki wasn't even done, afaik, he was never referred to as she) wouldn't 'count'.

you wouldn't happen to have any more general opinions about gender identity, would you

Re: Shapeshifters and Genderfluid

(Anonymous) 2017-11-04 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
I general, I think any alternate gender identity that doesn't include a fairly strong sense of gender dysphoria at its basis is just people playing pretend/trying things on for size/following a fad (depending on the person).
Which they are free to do, but I think if there's just "oh hey I want to identify this way" instead of "I need to identify this way", it's not really a gender identity rather than basic gender non-comformity dressed up as something "more". I'm also fairly sure that a lot of people who claim gender dysphoria don't really know what they're talking about because they think any unease they feel about an aspect of their perceived gender stereotypes or gender roles is dysphoria, but that's a whole other can of worms.

Yeah that's what I figured.

I would consider those views fundamentally bigoted and I encourage you to reconsider them. That's about all I have to say about that.

Re: Shapeshifters and Genderfluid

(Anonymous) 2017-11-04 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
No. I don't think I those views are anywhere close to bigoted and the fact that you think so makes me think that maybe you should reconsider your views because you seem to have a problem. That's all I gave to say about this, as well.
