I don't know how - just in principle - you distinguish between those things from the outside, honestly.

What, the difference between "seems like bromance" and "seems like romance"?

Hmm. The sound of a person's voice when they talk about someone they're into tends to be different than when they talk about other people. They kind of tense up internally so their pitch often changes a tiny bit. And the rhythm of their speech sometimes changes.

Also, you can sometimes hear forced casualness in a person's voice when they bring up someone they're very into. It's like, they really want to talk about this person but at the same time they don't want to sound like they want to talk about this person.

He also just heavily romanticizes this guy. Like, imagining that this guy would be the hero in a story and he himself would be the villain, but they'll be super close for a long time before the differences in their nature separate them. (He is not a bad person that I am aware of, for the record.)
