Re: this is what i get for not reading FS on time

At least one other latecomer is! But yeah, much like the anon above you, I don't know enough VNs to know that one, but the premise of DDLC did ring pretty familiar regardless. (It was still kinda neat, but I think my particular blend of media and technology exposure left my mind much less blown than seems to be the case for others.)

ayrt

Yay! I'm glad I'm not the only one XD

SPOILERS

DDLC was a huge surprise for me since I played the game without knowing any spoilers (I downloaded it from steam based on another person's FS). So like, when the bottle poem showed up I was thinking the horror element would be like, after reading this poem you die in 7 days or something, like something from the ring. I definitely wasn't expecting the truly effed up psychological horror of seeing the protag's crush hanging herself. Like the game was disturbing to me since I was expecting normal slasher horror stuff.

totono is similar to DDLC in that they both break the 4th wall, but totono is more I guess extreme? Obviously this is spoilers, but basically the premise is, the protag has a childhood friend named Miyuki, who's always had a crush on the protag, and another friend named Aoi. The first time you play the VN you go on the Miyuki route; there's a few H-scenes and the requisite happy ending, so it's all normal. The game goes to hell though when you try to go to the Aoi route - no matter what choice you make, you end up on the Miyuki route, except each iteration afterward she gets weirder and more possessive, like the H-scenes will be like, "must be disappointed, it's just like last time, huh?"

Eventually you'll pick the choices to get onto the Aoi route, and that's where things take a turn for the axe-crazy, because it turns out that Miyuki is aware she's trapped in an ero-game, and she's PISSED at you the PLAYER for not being happy staying on the Miyuki route and cheating on her with Aoi. And you get all this batshit insane stuff like Miyuki hiding under the bed while you're having sex with Aoi, after which she pops out, kills Aoi's cat, then kills Aoi and the protag. At one point, if you restart the game to try to get to a normal "Aoi" route, Miyuki will say something about being angry and the protag will have no idea what she's talking about (new route, new game, so no memories), but then Miyuki will turn to face YOU, the player, and say that she's pissed that YOU the PLAYER are interfering, after which the game will fritz and all your saves will be deleted.

tl;dr they're definitely similar lol

More kinda spoilery discussion

Ah, yeah, that IS very similar.

I think I probably heard about and was prompted to play it by the same post as you, and went in similarly avoiding spoilers. I was actually hoping for something more psychological, and on that front I was not disappointed! It's more the fourth wall fuckery that I didn't get quite as much out of as I think others would. I think I'm JUST familiar enough with the whole creative process that this sort of thing just reminds me of how there's a team of writers/artists/programmers on the other side who've very carefully laid out every detail. (Well, at least that's AFTER I realize that weird behavior isn't just my computer being a piece of shit, which is usually my first assumption. Because it is.)

I did still enjoy it though. Well, as much as I've done. I do still have some more poking around to do. In the process of Googling to make sure I had the name "Monika" right, I actually JUST now found out how to progress beyond the whole "staring at each other forever" stage without just doing a completely clean restart.
