Imagine you are living an absolutely normal, every day life. You have been dating a boy for a while. And suddenly, outta nowhere, he goes "oh btw I can't stick around I have to go HUNT VAMPIRES AND BE A GHOSTBUSTER!" I'd dump him too, not only because I'd think he was making shit up, but because I'm sorry, that either makes him a lying jerk or BATSHIT. If you have no reason to believe in ghosts or vampires or monsters or crap, why would you believe even someone you care about who suddenly says their job is saving the world from them?
But then she realizes, oh, shit, this stuff IS real. And it's after her. She knows remembers what her ex said, realizes he was telling the truth, knows that he's one of the people she can trust and the only person she knows of who could help her and not think she's crazy. Why wouldn't she ask for help? What else, in either of those situations, should she have done?
That said, I'm just extrapolating here. I love thinking about character motivations, so this interested me. Mostly, I think the OP was addressing how she STILL has people in the fanbase attacking her character when... said character was only in one episode and has never come back. Even if she had been a terrible character, that would be kind of ridiculous.
