I try not to be nitpicky about fanfic. I don't read that many historical AUs but even when the canon is set in another time I don't expect the author to become an expert just so they can write fic. But when they don't even try it's just annoying. I saw a fic where the author put right in the summary that they didn't know anything about the time period and hadn't done any research. At least they were honest and warned the readers but the time period was the 1970s. Is it that hard to research the 1970s?

"I saw a fic where the author put right in the summary that they didn't know anything about the time period and hadn't done any research. "

That's just plain lazy, IMO. It's right up there with a summary full of typos and misspelled words and a "I suck at summerys lol" disclaimer. No, thanks...
