I think they're probably just interested in the aesthetic, but as a history major it is incredibly aggravating when I see an obvious error in someone's period piece. It's even more aggravating when it's in an actual published book or professionally produced movie/tv show. Learn2read, folks!

"as a history major". Oh, dear. History majors who do not know the history of the country they are writing about (but imagine they do because everywhere has always been like America: 19th century England for example is NOT 19th century America) are some of the worst offenders.
