What pulls me out of Historical AUs more than anything is the use of language. There was a fic I tried once with a great premises and I couldn't make it past one character because everyone was using modern turns of phrase in a like Medieval universe.

That and period untypical acceptance of queer people. Getting a culture of a time and place turns me off way more than the actual historical accuracy. Yes, I know homophobia wasn't the same thorough out time but everyone just being cool and accepting gay people outright is far from realistic in most historical AUs.

Yup. I'm not asking for doctorate-level research and details. But for fuck's sake, can we not have same-sex couples getting married in some Italian cafe in 1880? Just not gonna happen.

:) And no one call each other "dude," like you said before. I was just reading a fic where the person cared enough to put period correct slang in. I'm not much of a history buff, aside from a few periods of time like Tudor England, so I'm not going to notice inaccuracies but dialogue can smack you in the face or draw you in to the place the author is trying to create.

Dialogue is the worst. I really enjoy research and always do my best to get things as right as possible in a short amount of time, so i think that maybe it just irks me that much more when someone can't be bothered to even *try*.

Yes. That's one of the things that made Twilight so infuriating to people is that Meyer had all kinds of inaccuracies in the books that a quick Google search would have cured and she didn't even bother. There is no excuse for people not to do research anymore when everyone with an internet connection has access to more knowledge than most people in human history, including past scholars, could even dream of.

A big personal pet peeve of mine is people who write Catholic priest fics who clearly do zero research about Catholicism or just priests in general.

Ah ha ha, well, *Twilight*. Why am i not surprised.

I get *very* annoyed at bad tattoo info in fics (i have them, my ex does them, i've worked at several shops), and absolutely ludicrous and inaccurate medical stuff. Argh.
