I thought he asked the women if they wanted to be his wives? Like...you could work for points...That said, I think his arrangement falls somewhere between prostitution and coercion...The women are exchanging a service for a (relatively) more comfortable life, however, I'm sure some of them are doing it out of fear. Some people consider coercion as rape, some don't. I don't even know, maybe I've been desensitized to this type of insidious behavior via the media and don't recognize rape as anything other than a violation of someone after they decline. Anything else falls into a shady grey area for me. It's still horrible. You're doing something you really don't want to in order to keep safe etc.

All this said, I don't woobify him, I think JDM is fire, and yes, I wish he didn't talk like that and swagger all the time. I'm stuck between finding him hot and repulsive, wanting to hit it and worrying he'd swing Lucille my way for reasons unknown to me. And I enjoy fic that does nothing to scale back his cruelty and showcase what a bastard he is. Because he is. A hot one.

But seriously, question, does he force the women to be his wives?

No.

Full disclosure: I have not seen past the first season of TWD. I do feel like I know a bit about the show just from cultural osmosis, though. I also am a researcher who has studied sexual assault for years of my life.

In a normal world, I believe that sex is harmful when one party is having sex when he or she does not want to be having sex. This is not necessarily illegal.

Sexual assault laws are built around consent. When you have drastic imbalances of power, however, consent becomes murky. That is why even consensual sexual activity is illegal in some cases (when someone is underage, for example).

In a world of zombies where a particular person is the leader of a group and controls (I assume) food, work, rewards, and punishments, there is a definite imbalance of power. And from what it sounds like, Neagan abuses this power to his own benefit. From my perspective, it sounds a little bit like the relationship of someone more than just a boss, more akin to a warden at a prison. In prisons, even consensual relationships between prisoners and correctional officers or administrators are considered assault because prisoners are not in a position to say "no" without the threat of retaliation and punishment. Even those prisoners who are initiating sexual relationships with guards are usually doing it to curry favor or for the benefits, rewards, and special treatment they will receive for doing so, not because they actually want to be having a sexual relationship. And these relationships are all considered sexual assault and can open up the officer or administrator to charges and lawsuits if discovered.

Of course this analogy is probably not perfect (again, haven't seen the show in years). But I can see why Neagan is described as a rapist. There is a definite imbalance of power where Neagan is both violent and has all the control. This calls into question just how much consent there actually is from his "wives."

Also, if you're not willing to consider the factors above in making a determination of sexual assault, what you're describing in your first couple of sentences could conceivably fit the definition of sex trafficking (which is sexual exploitation through the use of force, fraud, or coercion).

AYRT

Late, but the analogy you provide definitely puts it into perspective. I mean, it certainly feels messed up, and IRL, I would consider such a person an abuser (and given the example you provided, i can sure see how people would see him as a rapist). Sexual exploitation definitely fits the bill.

Thank you for responding!
