I don't know that anyone would say that the rest of the Internet has stayed the same. But it seems to me that what happens is that people talk about the changes in fandom without taking into account the broader context of the Internet. They just don't think about it and focus on fandom in a total vacuum. And also heavily emphasize the personal choices of people within fandom.

I don't know if I agree with that. If for example someone is saying fandom has become more negative, the fact that the internet itself has possibly become more negative, or that fandom is following the general trends of the masses, doesn't refute the first statement. Nor does it invalidate personal choices of people following the trends... or the people sticking around to complain about it when they could leave, too.

I've also never heard someone say "this change specific to fandom, only, has changed it for the worse as compared to the rest of the internet." Most of what I've seen is "this trend or these trends, regardless of how common they are in the rest of the internet, have shown up or keep showing up in fandom and have made fandom worse." It's not that people are ignoring context, it's that the context isn't an acceptable excuse or apology for whatever their complaint is.
