NAYRT but if stories like that become widely seen as problematic, it stands to reason that writers may try to avoid that trope in the future, leading to fewer stories about it for readers who enjoy that kind of thing to enjoy.

But that's kind of separate to the question of whether it's problematic. If it's problematic, it's problematic. And I think there's a strong argument that exoticism, as a trope, is pretty problematic. I don't think that means that it's wrong for people to write it, or enjoy it. But.

My mistake, then? I thought you were asking why they were sad that it was being labelled as such, not whether or not it should be labelled as such.

My mistake really, I probably should have said "Why do you think it's not problematic" in the first place

And what's so problematic about a work dealing with exoticism? A story exoticizing characters, yes, I agree it's problematic, it objectifies the person. But honestly I don't think there's anything wrong with stories dealing with the issue. It's something that actually happens in real life.

That's a fair point.

I don't know if it's representative of this book, and I would stand by the idea that a story that relies on portraying its characters as exotic for part of its appeal is problematic.
