Well, yeah. I haven't read OP's books so my ability to comment is extremely limited. But something considered exotic is a bit of a draw.
And, uh, how do I put this?
In my (Western) country people generally tell me I look prettier when I have a bit of a tan, risk of skin cancer be damned. It's people I've met from China and India that routinely used skin-lightening cream or warned that if I worked outdoors all summer I'd get too dark.
'Lighter is better' is not a beauty standard I follow, but I can't deny there are places where it's the norm.
And with all that, it still comes down to the story the author wants to tell and the story people are comfortable reading.
